It is important to weigh many factors before deciding whether or not to remain under your parents’ health insurance. These factors include your budget and the level of coverage you need.

What happens if I'm 26 and still covered by my parents insurance?

If your parents have a group or individual policy that covers dependents, you can stay on their health insurance plan until the age of 26. This is especially important for young adults with relatively low incomes who may be eligible for a premium subsidy in the exchange, or for premium-free coverage via Medicaid.

If your parents' company offers a grandfathered plan, which does not require that you be covered by the parent's policy, you are no longer eligible to remain on it after the age of 26. If you are required to be covered by your parent's plan, contact your parents and ask what you can do.
